Dr Mason may also be present for the birth of your baby and assist in looking after your little one in the hospital for the next few days before you and your little one are discharged. Temperature, heart rate, eye health, breathing rate, skin colour, Apgar scoring, as well as measuring birth weight are all areas that Dr Mason will focus on straight after birth.
Once discharged, your appointments with Dr Mason will be focused on ensuring your newborn is healthy, adjusting to life outside the womb and that you and your partner are doing well adjusting to parenthood. Providing parents with knowledge on new-born care is how Dr Mason instils confidence in new parents. While completely normal, moms will be screened for signs of post-partum depression (otherwise known as baby blues) as no new mother need be in pain when treatment and counselling can be provided.
Jaundice, sepsis, cradle cap, nappy rash and colic are common illnesses that newborns struggle with. Dr Mason will be on the lookout for these and help manage anything that may arise. For some, adjusting to life outside the womb can be tricky. Dr Mason's intuitive nature will be of value when ensuring your little one is of optimum health and achieving proper developmental stages.
Ensuring your little one is feeding well and getting adequate nutrition is essential to ensure a happy, healthy baby who has all the resources to grow and develop. To make sure you and your newborn are on the right track, Dr Mason provides counselling and support regarding feeding options for newborns and will assist you as a new mom with any breastfeeding or lactation concerns you may have.
